Campanula propinqua: Red Data Book of Armenia

Category. Vulnerable species. The extent of occurrence and the area of occupancy are less than 500 km2. Taking into consideration that the general area of distribution is situated outside the borders of Armenia, the category of threat has been downgraded to VU. It was not included in the first edition of the Red Data Book of Armenia. It is not included in the Annexes of CITES and that of the Bern Convention.

Description. Dichotomously branched annual plant 3–15 (30) cm. Flowers mainly terminal, on short pedicels, campanulate–infundibular, bluish–violet, at base yellowish. Lower cauline leaves spathulate, narrowed into indistinct petiole. Ornamental plant.

Distribution. In Armenia it occurs only in Darelegis floristic region (valley of Darb river, Arpa, Yeghegis, Yeghegnadzor). EOO is 360 km2, AOO is 32 km2. The number of locations is 4. Beyond the borders of Armenia the species grows in Nakhichevan, East and South Anatolia, Syrian Desert, North–West Iran.

Ecological, biological and phytocoenological peculiarities. Grows in middle mountain belt, at the altitudes of 1200–1600 meters above sea level, on screes and sands. Flowering from May to June, fruiting from June to July.

Limiting factors. Restricted extent of occurrence and area of occupancy, loss/degradation of habitats caused by land development in the valley of the rivers Arpa and Darb.

Conservation actions. No conservation actions. Necessary: monitoring of the population state.
