Carpesium abrotanoides: Red Data Book of Armenia

EN* B 1 ab(ii,iii) + 2 ab(i,ii,iii)

Category. Endangered species. Recently the only habitat has been found in Yerevan floristic region. The extent of occurrence and the area of occupancy are less than 10 km2. The category of threat has downgraded to EN since the main area of distribution is situated beyond the borders of Armenia. It was not included in the first edition of the Red Data Book of Armenia. It is not included in the Annexes of CITES and that of the Bern Convention.

Description. Perennial herb with thick, densely fibrose root. Stems 50–80 cm, rather thick, paniculate branched in upper part; branches long, virgate, foliated up to the tip. Leaves oblong, irregularly serrate–dentate. Capitula numerous, small, ovate–oblong, axillary. Marginal flowers with pale yellow, filiform corollas.

Distribution. In Armenia it occurs in Yerevan (surroundings of the village Lukashin) floristic region. AOO is 4 km2. The number of locations is 1. Besides Armenia the species grows in Ciscaucasia, East and West Transcaucasia, Talish, Europe, countries of the Mediterranean Sea basin, Central and East Asia.

Ecological, biological and phytocoenological peculiarities. Grows in lower mountain belt, at the altitudes of 700–800 meters above sea level, on the banks of the streams, in moist ravines and humid places. Flowering from June to July, fruiting from July to August.

Limiting factors. Restricted extent of occurrence and area of occupancy, loss/degradation of habitats caused by land development.

Conservation actions. No conservation actions. Necessary: survey on population numbers and range, search of new habitats, monitoring of the state of the population.
