Carum komarovii: Red Data Book of Armenia

Category. Critically endangered species. Endemic of Transcaucasia. Only one population is known. The extent of occurrence and the area of occupancy are less than 10 km2. It was included in the first edition of the Red Data Book of Armenia under Category 2: Rare species. It is not included in the Annexes of CITES and that of the Bern Convention.

Description. Perennial herb, 15–40 cm. Terminal lobes of leaves ovate–lanceolate. Rays of umbels 5–10, very unequal. Bracts absent or early deciduous. Bracteoles 2–4. Fruits ovoid, canals in valleculae solitary.

Distribution. In Armenia it occurs only in Zangezur floristic region: Khustup Mountain. AOO is 4 km2, location is 1. Besides Armenia it grows in East Transcaucasia.

Ecological, biological and phytocoenological peculiarities. Grows in alpine and sub–alpine belts, at the altitudes of 2100–3000 meters above sea level, on screes and on rocky slopes. Flowering in July, fruiting in August.

Limiting factors. Restricted extent of occurrence and area of occupancy, global climate change.

Conservation actions. No conservation actions. Necessary: monitoring of the population state.
