Pyrus voronovii: Red Data Book of Armenia

Category. Endangered species. Endemic of Armenia. Two sub– populations are known. The extent of occurrence and the area of occupancy are less than 500 km2. It was not included in the first edition of the Red Data Book of Armenia. It is not included in the Annexes of CITES and that of the Bern Convention.
Description. Tree 8–9 m, spiny, with globose crown. Leaves rhomb– shaped 7–7,5 x 4–4,5 cm, crenulate, sometimes almost integerrime, similarly narrowed at the both ends, coriaceous, glabrous, from above with sharply prominent, acute–angled veins. Fruits compressed–globose, 2,5 x 3 cm, green with red; pedicles 2 cm long.
Distribution. In Armenia it occurs in Zangezur (Geghi river gorge, Adjabadzh and Vachagan villages) and Meghri (Arevik, Lichk, Djindara, Mulk) floristic regions. EOO is 235 km2, AOO is 16 km2, the number of locations is 3.
Ecological, biological and phytocoenological peculiarities. Grows in middle and upper mountain belts, at the altitudes of 1400–2000 meters above sea level, at the edges of broad–leaved forests. Flowering from April to May, fruiting from June to September.
Limiting factors. Restricted extent of occurrence and area of occupancy.
Conservation actions. Part of the population grows on the territory of "Arevik" National park. Necessary: monitoring of the population state.
