Clematis vitalba: Red Data Book of Armenia

Category. Endangered species. Only one sub–population is known. The extent of occurrence and area of occupancy are less than 10 km2. Taking into consideration wide range of general distribution of the species the category of threat has been downgraded to EN. It was included in the first edition of the Red Data Book of Armenia under Category 1 Endangered species. It is not included in the Annexes of CITES and that of the Bern Convention.

Description. Climbing shrub with stems 2–5 m long. Leaves with long petioles, pinnate; leaflets ovate, at base cordate, at apex acute. Inflorescence paniculate, many–flowered. Flowers actinomorphic; perianth segments yellowish, 8–12 mm long.

Distribution. In Armenia it grows in Idjevan (Noyemberyan, Djudjevan) floristic region. AOO is 8 km2, the number of locations is 1. Besides Armenia the general area of distribution includes the Caucasus, Atlantic Europe, countries of the Mediterranean Sea basin, the Crimea, North Anatolia.

Ecological, biological and phytocoenological peculiarities. Grows in lower mountain belt, at the altitudes of 700–1000 meters above sea level, at forest edges, in the shrubs, along fences. Flowering in June, fruiting in July–August.

Limiting factors. Restricted extent of occurrence and area of occupancy.

Conservation actions. No conservation actions. Necessary: monitoring of the population state, search of new habitats.
