Chamaenerion dodonaei: Red Data Book of Armenia

Category. Endangered species. One sub–population is known. The extent of occurrence and the area of occupancy are less than 10 km2. Since the main area of distribution is situated beyond the borders of Armenia, the category of threat has been downgraded to EN. It was not included in the first edition of the Red Data Book of Armenia. It is not included in the Annexes of CITES and that of the Bern Convention.

Description. Perennial herb, up to 60 cm. Leaves linear–lanceolate, glabrous or from below adpressed pilose. Petals pink. Stamens 8; 4 of them are shorter, in 1 row. Style slightly longer than stamens.

Distribution. In Armenia it occurs only in Lori (Stepanavan, Tashir) floristic region. AOO is 8 km2, the number of locations is 1. Besides Armenia the general area of distribution includes Ciscaucasia, East Caucasus, West and Central Transcaucasia, Middle and South Europe, countries of the Mediterranean Sea basin, Asia Minor.

Ecological, biological and phytocoenological peculiarities. Grows in upper mountain belt, in wetlands, along river banks. Flowering from May to July, fruiting from August to September.

Limiting factors. Restricted extent of occurrence and area of occupancy, loss/degradation of habitats caused by habitat development for arable lands.

Conservation actions. No conservation actions. Necessary: survey on population numbers and range, search of new habitats, monitoring of the state of the population.
