Coronaria coriacea: Red Data Book of Armenia

Category. Endangered species. One population is known. The extent of occurrence and the area of occupancy are less than 10 km2. The species faces the threat of over–collection as a decorative plant, forestry activities, road constructions, expansion of arable lands as well. It was not included in the first edition of the Red Data Book of Armenia. It is not included in the Annexes of CITES and that of the Bern Convention.

Description. Perennial herb, 30–70 cm. Leaves oblong or elliptic. Petals coccineous or purple, 20–25 mm long.

Distribution. In Armenia it occurs only in Zangezur floristic region ("Shikahogh State Reserve", Srashen, Nerkin Hand). AOO is 8 km2. The number of locations is 2. Beyond the borders of Armenia the species grows in Nakhichevan, Talish, Central and South Europe, North–West Africa, North Iran, Middle Asia (Turkmenia).

Ecological, biological and phytocoenological peculiarities. Grows in middle mountain belt, at the altitude of 1300 meters above sea level, in the forest, near forest edges, at the roadsides. Flowering in June, fruiting in August.

Limiting factors. Restricted extent of occurrence and area of occupancy, loss/degradation of habitats caused by forestry activity, road construction, expansion of arable lands, as well as over–collection as decorative plant.

Conservation actions. The part of the populations is conserved in "Shikahogh" State Reserve. Necessary: monitoring of the population state.
