Hieracium pannosum: Red Data Book of Armenia

Category. Endangered species. The extent of occurrence and the area of occupancy are less than 10 km2. Area of distribution is severely fragmented. The category of threat has downgraded to EN because of the wide distribution of the species. It was not included in the first edition of the Red Data Book of Armenia. It is not included in the Annexes of CITES and that of the Bern Convention.

Description. Perennial herbs. All plant, covered by long (5–12 mm), rough, foxy–red and white hairs. Stems 15–35 cm, almost leafless in upper part. Leaves congested at stem base or slightly higher, forming false rosette; sessile, broadly lanceolate, smooth edged or denticulated. Capitula on the pedicles 8–15 cm long. Achenes 2,5–4 cm long, with 10 ribs, on the apex confluent into ring–shaped valliculum.

Distribution. In Armenia it grows in Shirak (mountain Arteni) and Darelegis (surroundings of Khachik village) floristic regions. AOO is 8 km2. The number of locations is 2, the distance between which is 150 km. Besides Armenia the species grows in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea basin and in Anatolia.

Ecological, biological and phytocoenological peculiarities. Grows in upper mountain belt, at the altitudes of 1600–2200 meters above sea level, on dry stony slopes, in the steppes and meadow–steppes. Flowering from July to August, fruiting in August.

Limiting factors. Loss/degradation of habitats caused by grazing.

Conservation actions. No conservation actions. Necessary: establishment of specially protected nature area on Arteni Mountain, monitoring of the population state.
