Old World flycatchers - Muscicapidae

Status. A poorly studied oligotopic species. Listed in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (ver. 3.1) as Near Threatened NT. According to IUCN criteria categorized as Data Deficient DD.

Distribution. Distributed in the Caucasus and Northern Iran, then westwards to the Balkan Peninsula.

Distribution in Armenia. Occurs in the northern, north–eastern and south–eastern parts of the country, in broadleaf and mixed forests.

Habitats. Lives in broadleaf forests with an essential presence of old hollow trees.

Biological traits. Three to seven eggs are laid once a year. Feeds on flying insects.

Population size and its trends. Available information is insufficient to judge about the population size. In the Meghri district, the population density is 0.09 individuals/ha.

Major threats. Not studied, but supposed to suffer from deforestation and consequent habitat loss.

Conservation measures. It is essential to assess population status and human impacts on the population so that to ensure its proper protection in the future. Special attention should be paid to forest management and its emphasis on preservation of old primeval forests (possibly, through the establishment of sanctuaries) and prevention of habitat fragmentation. It is important to reconsider the policy of environmental expertise related to forest use and to include the species to the plan of biodiversity monitoring.
