Status. A rare species of limited distribution in Armenia. Listed in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (ver. 3.1) as Least Concern. According to IUCN criteria categorized as Endangered EN B1a+2a.
Distribution. Asia Minor, Caucasus, Northern Iran, Northern India, Himalayas, China.
Distribution in Armenia. Recorded in the nesting site near Masis town, Armavir Province and on the Armash fish ponds, Ararat Province.
Habitats. Reedbeds.
Biological traits. In Armenia, a migratory species occurring in the nesting sites from April to September. Nestles in reedbeds, possibly twice a year, in May–June. The clutch consists of 3–6 eggs. The brooding period is 12 days.
Population size and its trends. Since recent times, recorded in small colonies.
Major threats. Nests can be destroyed by reedbed burning.
Conservation measures. Not protected. It is essential to set control over reedbed burning on the Armash fish ponds and to adjust it to the non–breeding season.
