Stilts and avocets - Recurvirostridae

Status. A very rare species of low numbers in Armenia. Listed in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (ver. 3.1) as Least Concern. According to IUCN criteria categorized as Vulnerable VU D1.

Distribution. Sporadically distributed throughout Europe.

Distribution in Armenia. Occurs in the Arax riverside and the Lake Sevan basin.

Habitats. In the past, it nestled on flat shores in the Ararat Valley and on the Lake Gilli. The status of habitats has been improving due to the expansion of water bodies in the Ararat Valley.

Biological traits. Nestles in dry open places nearby the water from mid–May to mid–June. The clutch consists of 4 eggs. The brooding period is 23 days. In the recent years, began to nestle again on the Ararat Valley.

Population size and its trends. On April 16, 1969, a few individuals were recorded on the Lake Lichk.

Major threats. Has always been rare in the country.

Conservation measures. Protected in Sevan National Park. No special measures are applied. It is essential to estimate population size and to determine the species distribution in the country.
