The Ministry of Environment sent a letter international partners to draw their attention to the real danger of environmental disasters as a result of Azerbaijan's large-scale aggression towards the territory of Armenia

After fact-finding activities, the Ministry of Environment, on behalf of the Minister Hakob Simidyan, sent a letter to representatives of the diplomatic corps, international organizations and partners to once again draw their attention to the real danger of environmental disasters caused as a result of Azerbaijan's large-scale aggression towards the territory of Armenia.
The fires caused by the large-scale aggression unleashed by Azerbaijan caused great damage to the "Jermuk" Forestry Enterprise in Vayots Dzor marz/region. Forest fires in this area have caused significant damage to the biodiversity of 10 hectares of forested area, including endemic flora and fauna, leading to land degradation. Plants growing in these areas (Juniper sabina, several pear varieties, etc.) and animals living herein (Armenian Mouflon, Bezoar Goat, Brown Bear, etc.) are registered in the Red Book.

Jermuk is endowed with a rich ecosystem (oaks, junipers, pines), which is also threatened, since forest fires damage specific species of plants and animals.

Targeted areas are of utmost significance for biodiversity conservation. These areas are rich in endemic and endangered species, which are vital not only for Armenia, but also for the whole world.

There are specially protected areas within the territories of Gegharkunik, Syunik and Vayots Dzor marzes/regions targeted by Azerbaijan. The mentioned areas are the habitat of endangered species of plants and animals (Armenian mouflon, bezoar goat, brown bear, South Caucasian leopard, etc.) included in both the RA Red Book and in the Red List of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), at the same time being an important corridor for the migration of these species.

Such activities definitely pose a threat to the environment, significantly affecting the effective implementation of obligations under international environmental treaties and conventions.
Highly appreciating the support of international partners, the RA Ministry of Environment expects effective intervention to prevent exacerbation, escalation and prolongation of exerted pressure on ecosystem resources.
