Bromopsis gabrielianae: Red Data Book of Armenia

Category. Critically endangered species. Endemic of Armenia. Only one population is known. The extent of occurrence and the area of occupancy are less than 10 km2. The species faces extinction caused by the changes in the habitat conditions in the result of climate change. It was not included in the first edition of the Red Data Book of Armenia. It is not included in the Annexes of CITES and that of the Bern Convention.

Description. Perennial herb with short, lignose, dark brown rhizome. Stems glabrous, glaucescent, erect, 20–60 cm, at bases covered with splitted sheaths of dead leaves. Inflorescence racemiform, compressed, 3–10 cm long, with few spikelets. Lemma with awn 2–5 mm long.

Distribution. In Armenia it grows only in Zangezur floristic region (mountain Kaputdjugh). AOO is 4 km2, the number of locations is 1.

Ecological, biological and phytocoenological peculiarities. Grows in alpine belt, at the altitudes of 3300–3500 meters above sea level, on screes, in rocky places. Flowering in July, fruiting in August.

Limiting factors. Restricted extent of occurrence and area of occupancy, climate change.

Conservation actions. No conservation actions. Necessary: monitoring of the population state.
