Steveniella satyrioides: Red Data Book of Armenia

Category. Endangered species. The extent of occurrence is less than 5000 km2, the area of occupancy is less than 500 km2. It was included in the first edition of the Red Data Book of Armenia under Category 1: Endangered species. It is included in the Annex of CITES as representative of Orchidaceae family. It is not included in the Annexes of the Bern Convention.

Description. Perennial herb 15–40 cm, with entire tubers, usually 1–leaved. Flowers greenish, tinged with purple. External perianth segments almost completely connate, spotted from inside. Labellum with saccate spur. Very ornamental plant.

Distribution. In Armenia it occurs in Idjevan (Aghaya mountain) and Zangezur (surroundings of Kapan) floristic regions. EOO is 600 km2, AOO is 12 km2, the number of locations is 2. Besides Armenia the species grows in the Caucasus, Crimea, North Anatolia and North Iran.

Ecological, biological and phytocoenological peculiarities. Grows in lower mountain belt, at the altitudes of 900–1300 meters above sea level, in open forests, forest glades, generally on clay soils. Flowering in May, fruiting in June.

Limiting factors. Restricted extent of occurrence and area of occupancy, fragmented area, loss/degradation of habitats caused by forestry activities.

Conservation actions. No conservation actions. Necessary: monitoring of the population state.
