Tulipa sylvestris: Red Data Book of Armenia

Category. Critically endangered species. It occurs in one floristic region. The extent of occurrence and the area of occupancy are less than 10 km2. In the first edition of the Red Data Book of Armenia it was included under Category 1: Endangered species. It is not included in the Annexes of CITES and that of the Bern Convention.

Description. Perennial herb 20–50 cm. Bulb tunics light, slightly coriaceous, hirsute in the collar and at base. Leaves linear–lanceolate usually upright, often reddish on the margins. Flower large, bright yellow inside, purple–greenish outside.

Distribution. In Armenia it grows only in Idjevan floristic region (Aygepar, Movses, Nerkin Karmir). AOO is 8 km2, the number of locations is 1. The main area of dsitribution includes South Transcaucasia, Italy, Sicily and Sardinia islands and North Iran.

Ecological, biological and phytocoenological peculiarities. Grows in lower mountain belt, at the altitudes of 700–1000 meters above sea level, in steppes and meadows, in the fields, forest edges. Flowering in April, fruiting in May.

Limiting factors. Restricted extent of occurrence and area of occupancy, loss/degradation of habitats caused by tillage.

Conservation actions. No conservation actions. Necessary: monitoring of the population state, search of new habitats.
