Status. A rare species of very limited distribution in Armenia. Listed in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (ver. 3.1) as Least Concern. According to IUCN criteria categorized as Endangered EN B1a+2a.

Distribution. The range is patchy, extending from the North Sea and Algeria eastwards to the Ob River headwaters and the foothills of the Tien Shan Mts.

Distribution in Armenia. Recorded in the Ararat Province's Armash fish ponds.

Habitats. Reedbeds.

Biological traits. In Armenia, a migratory bird occurring here from April to September. Nestles on the ground, in thickets of riparian vegetation. Three to six eggs are laid usually once a year in April–May. The brooding period is 10–14 days.

Population size and its trends. Since recent times, recorded in small colonies.

Major threats. Nests can be destroyed by reedbed burning.

Conservation measures. Not protected. It is essential to set control over reedbed burning on the Armash fish ponds and to adjust it to the non–breeding season.
