Gladiolus hajastanicus: Red Data Book of Armenia

Category. Endangered species. Endemic of Armenia. The extent of occurrence is less than 5000 km2, the area of occupancy is less than 500 km2. The area of distribution is severely fragmented. It was not included in the first edition of the Red Data Book of Armenia. It is not included in the Annexes of CITES and that of the Bern Convention.
Description. Perennial herb with bulbotuber. Stem 25–40 cm, thin. Leaves 1–2, with almost parallel nervation. Inflorescence 1–2 (3)– flowered. Perianth bilobate, purple. Ornamental plant.
Distribution. In Armenia it is distributed in Aragats, Sevan, Darelegis and Zangezur floristic regions. EOO is 3550 km2, AOO is 40 km2, the number of locations is 8.
Ecological, biological and phytocoenological peculiarities. Grows in upper mountain and sub–alpine belts, at the altitudes of 1800–2900 meters above sea level, in the meadows, in the sub–alpine oak open forests, in rocky places. Flowering from June to July, fruiting in August.
Limiting factors. Restricted extent of occurrence and area of occupancy, loss/degradation of habitats caused by grazing.
Conservation actions. Grows in “Sevan” National Park. Necessary: monitoring of the population state.
